If you look up on an autumn or winter night and notice a tiny group of six or seven stars packed closely together, you may have found the Pleiades (M45). Also known as the Seven Sisters, the Pleiades is one of the easiest open star clusters to recognize with the naked eye. It lies in the constellation Taurus and is visible from most of North America without a telescope.

What Do the Pleiades Look Like in the Night Sky?
To the naked eye, the Pleiades looks like a tiny knot of closely spaced stars. Most people can pick out around six bright members under ordinary viewing conditions, which leads to a common question: if the Pleiades is called the Seven Sisters, why can I only see six stars?
There isn't one fixed answer for how many you should see. Your eyesight matters, but so do light pollution, moonlight, haze, and atmospheric transparency. Under a clear, dark sky, some observers can distinguish seven or more stars. From a bright city, the cluster may look more like a small, slightly hazy patch with only a few obvious points of light.
Its compact shape is distinctive. First-time observers sometimes describe it as a tiny dipper, and it can even look a little like a miniature version of the Big Dipper. The resemblance is only visual, however; the two are unrelated.
Where Are the Pleiades?
The Pleiades star cluster is located in Taurus, not far from another well-known cluster called the Hyades. The orange-red star Aldebaran appears in the same general part of the sky and provides a useful landmark when learning your way around Taurus.
One thing worth avoiding is memorizing instructions such as “look east at 10 p.m.” The Pleiades does not remain in the same direction at the same time throughout the year. When Is the Best Time to See the Pleiades?
For observers in the United States, Canada, and other mid-northern latitudes, fall and winter are the easiest seasons to see the Pleiades in the evening sky. As autumn progresses, M45 rises earlier each night. By winter, it is already well placed in the evening and can climb high above the horizon.
A higher altitude usually means a cleaner view because you are looking through less of Earth’s atmosphere. This becomes particularly noticeable when using binoculars, which reveal many stars that are too faint to see with the naked eye.

If you are looking for the Pleiades during the winter observing season, Orion makes an excellent starting point. Orion is easy to recognize by the three stars of Orion’s Belt, which form a short, nearly straight line.
From Orion, work your way toward Taurus. Look for orange-red Aldebaran and the broad V-shaped pattern of the Hyades. Continue beyond this area and you will come to the much tighter group of stars that forms the Pleiades.
Learning this kind of star-hopping is more useful than memorizing compass directions. The altitude and direction of a constellation change during the night, but the patterns formed by the stars remain essentially unchanged on a human timescale. Once Orion, Taurus, and the Pleiades become familiar, navigating this part of the winter sky gets much easier.
Are There Really Only Seven Stars in the Pleiades?
Despite the name Seven Sisters, the Pleiades contains far more than seven stars. M45 is a genuine open star cluster, made up of many stars that share a common origin. Only a handful of its brightest members are obvious to the unaided eye.

These stars are not simply an accidental pattern of unrelated objects that happen to line up from our point of view. How Far Away Are the Pleiades?
The Pleiades lies roughly 440 light-years from Earth. That means the light reaching your eyes tonight began its journey more than four centuries ago. In everyday terms, 440 light-years is an enormous distance, but on the scale of the Milky Way, M45 is one of the relatively nearby young open clusters.
The cluster is thought to be around 100 million years old. Compare that with the Sun, which is about 4.6 billion years old, and the Pleiades is remarkably young. Its stars formed from the same general cloud of interstellar material, making the cluster useful for studying how stars of different masses develop when they begin with roughly the same age and environment.
Why Is There Blue Nebulosity Around the Pleiades?
Long-exposure photographs of M45 often show beautiful blue clouds surrounding its brightest stars. It is easy to assume that this material is left over from the cloud in which the Pleiades originally formed, but that is not the usual interpretation today. The cluster is passing through an unrelated region of interstellar dust.
Light from the bright blue stars scatters off this dust, producing what astronomers call a reflection nebula. Blue wavelengths are scattered efficiently, helping create the striking blue appearance seen in astrophotography.
Don’t expect the view through binoculars or a small telescope to look like those photographs. Cameras can collect light over long exposures and reveal faint nebulosity that is extremely difficult to see visually. Under most conditions, your attention will be drawn to the stars themselves rather than the surrounding dust.
What Do the Pleiades Look Like Through Binoculars?
The Pleiades is one of those objects that often looks better through binoculars than through a high-powered telescope. M45 covers a fairly large area of the sky, and the wide field of view provided by binoculars allows you to see the cluster as a whole while revealing many fainter stars that are invisible to the naked eye.
Try looking at M45 without optical aid first. Take a moment to count how many stars you can distinguish and notice the overall shape. Then switch to a common pair of 7×50 or 10×50 binoculars. The small group of six or seven obvious stars suddenly becomes a much richer field filled with fainter members.
A telescope can still provide interesting views, especially at low power, but too much magnification may leave you looking at only a small section of the cluster. For M45, a wide field is often more useful than high magnification.

Once you have found M45, look for Taurus, Aldebaran, and the Hyades, then work your way back toward Orion. Instead of learning the night sky as a collection of isolated stars, you begin to see how constellations, bright stars, and deep-sky objects fit together.
