Antares: How to Find the Bright Red Star in the Southern Summer Night Sky

If you spend a clear summer night in North America and look south after dark, you will likely notice a bright star with a distinctly reddish hue. This is Antares, known in ancient China as the "Great Fire Star" (Dà Huǒ), and it is the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius. For astronomy enthusiasts who are just learning to identify constellations, Antares is an exceptional star to get to know during summer: it is bright enough to be seen easily with the naked eye, and its unique orange-red color makes it simple to distinguish from surrounding stars. Once you locate Antares, you can explore the rest of Scorpius and even search for the nearby M4 globular cluster.

What kind of star is Antares?

Its Western name is Antares, and its Bayer designation is Alpha Scorpii, located in the central region of the constellation Scorpius. In Western astrology and astronomy, it represents the "Heart of the Scorpion."

Antares has an average apparent magnitude of around 1.0, making it one of the brightest stars in the night sky. Located about 550 light-years from Earth, it is not a typical Sun-like star, but rather a red supergiant that has evolved into the later stages of its life cycle.

Its most easily recognizable feature is its color. While most naked-eye stars appear white or pale yellow, Antares clearly exhibits a distinct orange-red hue under clear sky conditions. Because of this, even if you are not yet familiar with Scorpius, knowing its general direction gives you a great chance to spot it directly by its color.

Why does Antares look red?

A star's color is tied directly to its surface temperature. Antares is a relatively cool red supergiant, which causes its visible light to appear distinctly orange-red. For beginners, it serves as an intuitive visual target for understanding the relationship between stellar color and temperature.

The name Antares itself is connected to this color. Because its reddish hue easily calls Mars to mind, the ancient Greeks named it Antares, typically translated as "rival of Ares" or "competitor of Mars."

When Mars travels near Scorpius, if both are visible in the sky at the same time, you can compare the colors of the planet and the red supergiant side-by-side. This kind of naked-eye observation requires no equipment at all, making it ideal for anyone starting out in astronomy.

How to find Antares in North America?

For observers across most of the United States and Canada, finding Antares is not difficult.

On summer nights after dark, start by finding a location with an unobstructed view of the southern sky, free from high-rises, large trees, or terrain blocking your sightline. Then, look for a prominent, distinctly red star low in the southern sky. The constellation Scorpius forms a sweeping, curved "J" shape—its lower section bends off to one side like a scorpion's tail, while Antares sits right near the constellation's center.

Because Scorpius has a low declination, it does not rise high into the night sky from North American mid-latitudes the way constellations like Lyra or Cygnus do; instead, it tracks low along the southern sky. Consequently, the further south you are in the U.S., the easier it typically is to see all of Scorpius. The further north you go, the closer Scorpius remains to the southern horizon.

What is the best time to observe Antares?

In the Northern Hemisphere, Antares is visible from late spring to early autumn, with summer being an ideal time for evening observation. Between June and August in particular, looking south after dark usually makes it quite easy to spot.

By late August, Antares remains visible in the early evening, but as the season progresses, it sets progressively earlier toward the southwest. Come autumn, it draws closer to the southwestern horizon at dusk, shortening the available observation window.

This means if you want to learn to identify Scorpius, you shouldn't wait until late fall. Choosing a clear night between June and August in a location with an unobstructed southern view is far more suitable.

Furthermore, Antares itself is extremely bright, so unlike faint deep-sky targets such as nebulae or galaxies, it does not rely heavily on dark sky conditions. Even in urban or suburban areas, as long as your southern view isn't severely blocked, you usually have a great chance to see it with the naked eye.

Is the "Fire" in "July's Declining Fire Star" Actually Antares?

Antares is not only a well-known star, but it also holds a very important place in traditional Chinese astronomy and culture.

In ancient China, this bright red star was called "Dahuǒ" (the Great Fire Star). It belongs to the Heart Mansion (Xīnxìu) of the Azure Dragon of the East, serving as the most prominent star at its center—hence its Chinese name, Heart Star Two (Xīnxìu Èr). In the famous phrase "In the seventh month, the Fire Star declines" (Qī Yuè Liú Huǒ) from the Classic of Poetry (Shī Jīng, "Odes of Bin - Seventh Month"), the "Fire" traditionally refers to this Great Fire Star, which is the Antares of today.

Here, "declining fire" (Liú Huǒ) does not describe scorching weather or "raining heat," but rather refers to the change in the position of the Great Fire Star in the sky.

As the seasons progress, the Great Fire Star gradually moves westward and sinks lower in the evening sky. Through long-term observations of the night sky, ancient people used these seasonal shifts in stellar positions to track the time of year. Therefore, "July's declining Fire Star" actually describes an astronomical phenomenon closely tied to seasonal change.

What else is worth observing near Antares?

Once you locate Antares, don't end your observing session right away, as there is a deep-sky object nearby that is extremely well-suited for beginners to find—the globular cluster M4 (Messier 4).

Located about 5,500 light-years from Earth, M4 is one of the closer globular clusters to our solar system. Because its position in the sky is very close to Antares, Antares can serve directly as a guidepost star for locating M4.

If the sky is dark enough, you can use standard binoculars to slowly sweep the area near Antares. M4 will not appear as a sharp point of light like a star, but rather as a faint, hazy little patch of light. Using a telescope with a larger aperture under good sky conditions allows you to further observe its concentrated core structure.

As a result, a simple session observing Antares can actually connect three different levels of targets: first identifying a red supergiant with the naked eye, then recognizing the constellation Scorpius, and finally using binoculars to hunt down the M4 globular cluster.

Can you see Antares with binoculars?

Absolutely, though you do not actually need a telescope or binoculars to see Antares in the first place.

The naked eye is already more than enough to take in its striking brightness and distinct orange-red hue. When using standard binoculars—such as a 7x50, 8x42, or 10x50—Antares will appear significantly brighter, but you still will not see a massive resolved disk like a close-up photo of the Sun. Because stars are so astronomically distant, they remain pinpoint dots of light even through standard amateur optics.

The real value of binoculars lies in helping you see the fainter stars surrounding Antares and locating the nearby globular cluster M4. For beginners starting out with northern hemisphere summer stargazing, this approach is far more practical than chasing high magnification right away.
