As we enter mid-August, the North American summer night sky still offers a wealth of observable targets. Among the celestial events to watch this week, from August 14th to 21st, 2026, are the close conjunction of Mercury and Jupiter, Mars's passage past the M35 open cluster, Venus's proximity to the Moon, and the Moon's approach to Antares and Saturn. Additionally, this week features deep-sky objects such as the NGC 6939 open cluster, the NGC 6946 "Fireworks Galaxy," and the Spiral Nebula, all suitable for telescope exploration. For North American stargazing enthusiasts just starting out, this is a great week to balance planetary, lunar, and deep-sky observations.

Five Most Watched Celestial Events This Week

1. Close Conjunction of Mercury and Jupiter

On the morning of August 15th, Mercury will pass approximately 0.6° north of Jupiter, forming a very close conjunction before sunrise.

This is one of the most worthwhile planetary conjunctions to observe early this week. Jupiter will be approximately magnitude -1.8, and Mercury approximately magnitude -1.2, both very bright. Using binoculars or a small telescope, both planets can be seen simultaneously, allowing a clear view of their significant difference in angular diameter.

North American observers should choose a location with a clear eastern horizon and complete the observation before sunrise. Because the sun is about to rise, all telescopes and binoculars must be put away before sunrise to avoid accidentally looking directly at the sun.

2. Mars and M35 in the Same Frame: Ideal for Binocular Observation

On the morning of August 14th, Mars was located in Gemini, less than 1° from the famous open cluster M35.

M35 has a magnitude of approximately 5.3, a diameter of nearly half a degree, and contains over 100 young stars. Due to the very close proximity of Mars and M35, both planets and clusters can be observed in the same field of view using low-powered telescopes or binoculars.

This is an excellent starting point for Mars observation for beginners. Observing at the same time over several consecutive days will also reveal the gradual movement of Mars relative to the background stars, a change that provides a visual demonstration of the planet's true motion across the sky.

Venus and the Moon: A Bright Spot in the Western Evening Sky

From August 15th to 16th, Venus and the Moon will form a striking conjunction in the evening sky.

On August 15th, Venus reaches its greatest eastern elongation, with an angular distance of 46° from the Sun, making it visible in the western sky after sunset.

The following evening, the Moon will be about 9.5° away from Venus, both located near Virgo. Through a telescope, Venus's phases will be clearly visible, with approximately 48% of its surface illuminated.

This conjunction can be appreciated with the naked eye, while a telescope will allow for further observation of Venus's phase changes. Spica, the brightest star in Virgo, is also worth looking for and can serve as an important reference point for locating the Moon and Venus.

Deep Sky Observation: NGC 6939 and the "Fireworks Galaxy"

On the evening of August 18th, the deep sky observation window for the week gradually opened. With reduced moonlight interference, it's possible to try and locate the open cluster NGC 6939 in the constellation Cepheus. It has a magnitude of approximately 8 and a diameter of about 8 arcminutes, making it potentially visible with binoculars.

Near NGC 6939 is the famous NGC 6946 "Fireworks Galaxy." This is a spiral galaxy facing Earth, with a magnitude of approximately 8.9, and has recorded multiple supernova explosions over the past century. Due to its lower surface brightness and the influence of Milky Way dust, it is more difficult to observe than the cluster itself.

Using a larger aperture telescope, the galactic structure can be seen more clearly. These two targets are very close together, making it ideal for a "two-target" deep sky observation.

Helical Nebula and Lunar Observation

On August 19th, the waxing crescent moon will still dominate the night sky, limiting deep-sky observation time. However, the Helical Nebula (NGC 7293) in Aquarius is still visible after midnight.

The Helical Nebula is approximately 16 arcminutes in diameter and has a magnitude of about 8, making it a relatively large planetary nebula. Because its light is scattered over a large area, it is not as concentrated and bright as some smaller planetary nebulae. It is still possible to see it in a dark sky using binoculars or a small telescope; larger telescopes with a nebula filter will provide even better viewing results.

From August 20th to 21st, the moon will approach the red giant Antares. When the moon passes near Antares, the two will form a distinct star-moon conjunction, which is also excellent for observing craters and valleys on the lunar surface.

How to plan your best stargazing time this week?

If you're a beginner, you can plan your observations as follows:

Before sunrise: Focus on Mercury, Jupiter, and Mars. August 15th is especially worthwhile, as the close conjunction of Mercury and Jupiter is one of the easiest planetary events to photograph this week.

After sunset: Focus on Venus, the Moon, and the Virgo region. Around August 16th, the conjunction of Venus and the Moon is ideal for both naked-eye and binocular observation.

After 10 PM: After the moonlight weakens, you can try observing deep-sky targets like NGC 6939 and NGC 6946.

Midnight to early morning: Try observing the Helical Nebula, and pay attention to the close approach of the Moon to Antares on August 20th and 21st.

North American Stargazing Equipment Recommendations for Beginners

Many celestial events this week don't require expensive equipment. Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Mars, and the Moon can be spotted with the naked eye; binoculars will significantly improve the observation of M35, star clusters, and the Moon.

If you have a telescope with an aperture of 70mm or larger, you can further observe Venus's phases, Mars, Saturn, and their moons. For faint deep-sky objects such as NGC 6946 and the Spiral Nebula, it is recommended to use a larger aperture telescope in a location far from urban light pollution.

When choosing an observation location, a dark sky, good weather, and a wide field of view are often more important than expensive equipment.
